Michael Wilson

The Michael Wilson studio was founded in the fall of 2000. The Japanese-American woodworker builds individually designed furniture from richly grained hardwoods, which are hand carved with old school joinery. The exquisite pieces are branded and dated when finished. Wilson creates modern-organic, sculptural, and sleek designs, turning woodworking into a fine art.

Before focusing on a career in design, Wilson was a sushi chef for seventeen years, where he honed his skill for detailed work. He began designing out of necessity, teaching himself how to make furnishings for his home in California. Learning quickly, he developed his own treatment for every step of production, choosing his materials from local suppliers, milling lumber himself, and creating his personal recipe for a non-synthetic oil and wax finish.

His appreciation for the natural and organic wooden forms and his labor intensive chairs, tables, lamps, and sculptures look effortlessly released from their core. The California walnut or acacia pieces reach Wilson's goal of the functional but distinctive, efficient yet soulful. Each piece movingly communicates its heritage with undeniable grace.

"Most all the furniture I create are from wood and it is important to understand that wood is an organic material. I incorporate the natural idiosyncrasies of the wood, whether it is small knots, irregular grain, or any other imperfection, because it is my personal affinity, with the material evokes the beauty and ultimately the design."

There is no standard lead time for a piece of work it depends on the design and the scale of work. There is no design fee if a piece is being ordered from an existing work and there are no changes in the design. The design fee for custom work starts at $300 for one concept where I provide sketches. The design fee will go toward the purchase of the work once the designed is approved and an agreement is signed.

At this time, a tentative delivery date is scheduled and a 50% deposit is required to start the work. The balance is due upon completion prior to shipping or delivery of the work.

The shipping expense is paid by the client and I work with a company that has blanket wrap shipping with insurance.
